Now I have been doing a lot of research and looking into the Warhammer 40k RPG: Dark heresy and I have to say....I hate it. I also know that many people who have an interest in 40k also dislike the game as a whole. There were a few nice touches but mainly just frustration. So last summer I started to design my own RPG based upon 40k. So I first had to chose an era and I decided on the Horus Heresy era. Now this limits me at the start of my endevour because really there is only one "race" which means at the start I don't go running wild all over. I have been working on it and I am thinking things are coming along nicely however now I need to involve other people. so here are a few questions I would like to ask my fellow avid fans of 40k.

1. What do you guys/gals want from a 40k RPG?

2. What did you like about Dark Heresy (if you played it)?

3. What would you like to see implemented in the RPG from the tabletop game?

4. What features from other RPG's would be interesting to use?

5. Gimme ideas!! :D

Thanks for all the help ladies and gentleman.

Nathan

1. What I've been getting out of Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader thus far.
2. I think it is the GM that has made it fun. We don't usually run book missions, but stuff he makes up on the fly. For example our little Rogue Trader ran crusade into the Halo Stars. I did like how things went. Only gripe I had was how easy it was for my character to freak out at seeing the warp or a daemon.
3. d100/ d10 system seems to work very nicely. Not a fan of other systems.
4. Unknown. Only did a bunch of white wolf stuff in the far past and that does not seem like it would work well for 40k in my opinion.
5. Have none at this time.

My main problem with Dark Heresy is this. I feel like I am playing inquisitor, not 40k. You are never in the thick of the action, you never get into the epic battles that we both play out and read in the books. It is just another role playing game, nothing special. The backdrop and history that Warhammer 40k brings with it is so rich with so many excellent characters why are we basically banned from enjoying it. Now I have played Dark Heresy, Necromunda, Inquisitor, Space Hulk, 40k, read all of the gaunt's ghosts books, all of the heresy books (out atm) and when I play dark heresy I just don't feel part of the game. Perhaps I am wrong but that is how I feel. Please debate Dark Heresy here too, I wanna know if I am the only one that feels this way....

My son played with Dark Heresy a bit, but I didn't look all that closely at the system so I don't have any opinion on how good it is. In my experience with RPG's in general, it's more about the people playing than it is the system. A bad gaming system can ruin the experience of course, but I haven't seen a truly bad system since AD&D 2nd edition. I have an irrational objection to d10 systems because the dice are not symmetrical in all directions (hey, I said it was irrational, didn't I?), but I have to admit that White Wolf's system is pretty good. Really, what you need is a good game master who can handle the amount of effort required to GM well, and you need a good group of players. It only takes one idiot to make the whole experience no fun. I gave up RPG's in college because there always seemed to be at least one idiot.
