A couple of days ago, Scott and I played a game of WHFB at 2,000pts each. Scott wanted to see if he could squeeze out 2,000 points. Of course, I was more than game to help him with this...
his army consisted of the following...
Dwarf Lord - Gromril armor, Shield, oath stone, Dwarf Handgun Runic Weapon- Master rune of Swiftness, Rune of fury, Grudge Rune Runic Armor- Rune of Stone Runic Talisman- Rune of the furnace .................. 263 pts
Dwarf Thane - Battle Standard bearer, Gromril armor Runic Banner- Strollaz Rune, Master rune of Stromni redbeard, Rune of battle ............................................................... 270 pts
Runesmith - Gromril Armor Runic talisman- Master rune of dismay, 2 runes of spellbreaking ............................................................... 151 pts
15 Longbeards - Full command, Shields, heavy armor Runic banner- Ancestor Rune, Rune of battle, Rune of Sanctuary ............................................................... 255 pts
10 Thunderers - Shields, Full Command ................ 175 pts
10 Thunderers - Shields, Full Command ................ 175 pts
15 Miners - Full Command, Blasting Charges, Steamdrill ............................................................... 245 pts
Cannon - Rune of forging, Rune of reloading........... 135 pts
Cannon - Rune of forging................................. 125 pts
Grudge Thrower - Rune of burning....................... 85 pts
Organ Gun - ................................................ 120 pts
the basic concept was simple, shoot the heck out of everything and hold the line with a strong unit of Longbeards led by the Lord AND the BSB this would mean before a blow is even struck, they would be receiving +5 to combat res which is just RIDICULOUS! and thats NOT including +2 for two extra ranks... then the miners appear somewhere and there combat smashes the remaining forces from the flank or rear (or takes care of warmachines) I went with my usual set up, this is because I'm a firm believer that you should create ONE armylist and roll with it, perfect it and use it every game. this way, you can develope well rehearsed tactics and little tricks to help you survive and win and you also save time in prep.
So we set up for a basic pitched battle on a 4' x 4' table. I rolled for spells and got Hell shriek, Titilating dilusions, lash of Slaanesh and Aura of Aquaisance. This meant I didn't have many damage spells, but i DID have plenty of ways to mess with his battleline... so we set up and the game began...
Before the game began, most of his gun line moved forward thanks to the awesome banner and suddenly before the game had started, EVERYTHING WAS IN RANGE! Turn one consisted of him shooting the hell out of me while I tried to advance towards him. His stone thrower killed a whole bunch of my warriors, his cannons made short work of some of my chosen and then his organ gun wiped out my marauder horsemen. My response was to get lined up for a charge in the second turn.
Turn two attempted to charge his longbeards, but rolled really bad and had a failed charge. Scott continued his VERY efficient ranged killing taking even more of my warriors, a load of my marauders AND some more chosen. I wasn't sure if i was even going to make it into combat... Then to make matters worst, his Miners made it on to the board, right behind my General...
Turn three I FINALLY got some charges, my Chosen managed to charge one of the units of thunderers and my marauders managed to charge the unit of Longbeards along with a flank charge from the Chaos Knights, My battle standard bearer issued his challenge to the Dwarf lord who promptly excepted... Though I caused massive amounts of damage, and even scored a wound on the general who didn't cause anything back, the unit held due to the ridiculous + 6 to combat that I was facing... the combat ended in a tie. the chosen chomped through the unit of thunderers and over ran... leaving them behind the gun line, but dangerously close to the cannons... Suprisingly, The Miners did not charge my general in the rear, but chose to try and capture a table quarter...
So began turn four... My general who been sckulcking in the sidelines rushed towards the aid of the of my Chosen, to help line up for a charge against the second unit of thunderers... the organ gun began to move to a better vantage point to begin once again with its death of shootiness... The shooting phase had a nice suprise for me, the Grudge thrower that had been decimating my Chaos warriors and chosen, MISFIRED and could not shoot for two turns... the combat in the center of the battle field was finally beaten and won by the Chaos side and the persued the longbeards into the flank of the thunderers, The dwarfs once again held firm. but things were starting to go my way...
Turn five, The miners Charged into my Chaos warriors and sorcerer, with there only being a single rank left, they fancied there chances, the cannons over shot their marks and with there being no shooting, we moved into combat, I was astonished when the miners not only managed to WIN combat against the warriors, but ran them down ready for a charge into the Chosen which were also only seven strong now. The Knights quickly polished off the thunderers and overcharged into the stone thrower. In my turn, I managed to cast Aura of Aquaisance which turned the Knights into a Terror bomb. Only one cannon fled, but this still left the two crews standing on the hill to be battled against... I killed off the stone thrower crew but the second cannon crew held strong. Elsewhere, my Marauders were hunting for the Organ gun and it's crew. They rolled for charge, but were JUST out of range. they promptly got fired upon, losing 6 men.
Final Turn- the Chosen scoffed at the Miners and charged, but to their surprised when the Miners threw there Charges killing no less than three of the Chosen. before being cut down and LOSING combat, the chosen fled and were barely able to get away. The marauders FINALLY charged the Organ gun and made short work of the crew, while the knights polished off the last off the last of the crew from the remaining war machine.
result....
Chaos MAJOR VICTORY!
After thoughts... I was surprised at just how GOOD Dwarfen gun lines really are, I would have faired a LOT worst if he hadn't got some bad dice rolls not to mention the fact that his miners went above and beyond for the stunties. We both agreed that the Miners deserved MVP award that game. Still struggling to get off that magic i want, but i think I'm narrowing it down. next game maybe...
