The Battle Barn

Basically just interested in how people figured out which faction they enjoy playing? I've been looking at the many various factions available, and have yet to decide on which would be most enjoyable. I'm hoping that hearing from other people will possibly strike a chord with me and help me to narrow down a faction to play.

I chose Legion of Everblight because I liked the idea of the dragonspawn. The warlocks have to create them using their own blood. As I researched the faction a bit I found that Legion works best when it focuses on its heavy warbeasts. I think that's what sealed it. After playing 40k for as long as I have playing an army that doesn't center around infantry is what I was looking for. Plus, I've been a fan of Godzilla since I was a little kid and having an army of "Godzilli" sounded epic.

As with most wargames, it's all about how you want your faction to play. If you've got a preferred playstyle find out which faction would best support that style and jump.

I play 3 different factions now and I chose them all for pretty different reasons.

I started with Khador because I liked the whole "we are slow but dammit when we get there it's going to hurt!" mentality. There are popular ways of playing Big Red that involve the use of a lot of tricky stuff and fast infantry but just like Mike and his beasts I wanted to play an army where I could lead a phalanx of bigass red robots across the field to smash my opponent to dust.

I picked up Magnus the Traitor next, he's a merc caster and to be honest I did it mostly because of gameplay, his list just has SO much synergy and I wanted to see how it would all play out. Mercs also just have that dirty, grimy feel to them that can be pretty appealing, the idea that they're fighting the sovereign forces of various kingdoms with hundred year old jacks and second-rate equipment is kinda awesome.

Lastly I wanted to get into Hordes with an army that was nothing like either of my other two factions. Legion fit the bill perfectly; they're fast, relatively fragile, and rely on their magic a lot more. Granted I still picked the big smashy hammer in pThagrosh but still, dragons!

The other three Hordes factions are all very different; trollbloods rely on extremely tough infantry and buffs to support slowish beasts but those beasts regenerate as they kill models which can make them tough to keep down. Circle Orboros is about as fast as legion but even squishier. They have very powerful melee units and tons of tricky movement shenanigans. Lastly, Skorne are bullies with the toughest beasts around and tons of fury management. They've also got "skornergy" which relates to their habit of killing or damaging their own units to grant bonuses.
Fun stuff all around.

I pretty much played every faction at one time or another, and just decided I like to set things on fire (Menoth) and clobber things into the ground (Trolls).
