In 7th edition, the Dwarf Master Engineer had to be attached to a unit (war machine), so there was no confusion over which war machine got his assistance. However, in 8th edition, the Dwarf Master Engineer can "help" any war machine within 3" now, so if I put 3 cannons within 3" of a master engineer which/how many can he help?

I have heard the following suggestions:

  • He is "assigned" to a specific unit, even though he does not need to be physically joined and can help only that one unit

  • He does not have to be designed for any particular war machine, but once he helps one, that is the only war machine he can assist from that point forward

  • He can help any one war machine within 3" per turn, but can choose to help a different war machine each turn, should he want

  • He can wait until a failure happens (where he can help with a re-roll), then be designated to that unit, either for the turn or the remainder of the game

  • He can help as many units within 3" of him each turn...in other words, he can help everyone every turn

I can see the arguments for each of the choices. My arguments have been with Todda, me, myself and I, so not a lot of different opinions on the subject. If anyone has seen anything official on that, it would be fantastic. Otherwise, your own opinions and why would be very helpful.

If the phrase is exactly "help any war machine within 3"" then your third bullet point would be correct.

Yes, he can 'help' any ONE warmachine of his choice once per turn. It may be a different warmachine each turn. Just One.
